CE Rep. Says Integration Into Europe Will Be Settled

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"In 2000 the issue of Armenia’s membership in the Council of Europe will be settled as there are all preconditions for it," Chairman of the Congress of Local and Provincial Authorities Alen Chenar said at his meeting with Armenian President Robert Kocharian December 14.

Laying special emphasis on Armenia’s integration into the European structures–Kocharian pointed out that Armenia is striving to become a full member of the European community. Serious steps are being made towards making the economic and democratic reforms in the country irreversible and bringing the country’s legislation to conformity with European standards–the president said.

The sides also discussed issues related to the local government system. Chenar stated that seminars on local government problems are expected to be organized in the capitals of the three Transcaucasian countries with the assistance of the Council of Europe.

Kocharian expressed the opinion that local government problems are of particular importance to countries which are in a transitional period. He also pointed out the importance of the government decentralization processes.

Chenar also said that possibilities of cooperation between Nant and Yerevan–in particular–in the transport and rubbish incineration spheres are expected to be discussed.
