Karabakh Prime Minister Attacked; Government Blasts Babayan for Attempt

STEPANAKERT (Noyan Tapan)–The Commander of the Armed Forces of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Samvel Babayan accompanied by a group of individuals close to his circle provoked a squabble with Karabakh Prime Minister Anushavan Danielian in front of the Karabakh Government building Tuesday. No casualties were reported.

Later that day– Nagorno-Karabakh Republic president Arkady Ghoukassian met with public officials and described the incident as an act of hooligans and gave assurances that law enforcement agencies would look into the case.

The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic government issued a statement Wednesday saying that a day earlier "Samvel Babayan and a group of his accomplices made an encroachment on Prime Minister Anushavan Danielian near the government building–which infuriated the people and all of us."

The statement went on to assert that Karabakh government officials "qualify this crime as an encroachment not only against the prime minister but against the statehood and the entire executive branch of government. We ensure that those responsible for the crime will be punished in all the strictness of the law."

Government officials also stated that the political posturing of the president and the government aimed at restoring law and order is impossible to foster "by such provocation aimed at destabilizing the internal political situation in the country and artificially creating a confrontational atmosphere."

The statement was signed by all members of Ghoukassian’s cabinet.
