ANC Valley Chapter Hosts Officials During Reception

SHERMAN OAKS–Calif–More than 100 ANC supporters gathered at the home of Vahak and Baydzar Thomassian in Sherman Oaks–California last Friday–to meet with their local representatives and learn more about current Armenian National Committee initiatives and planned projects for the year 2000.

The gathering heard remarks from ANC San Fernando Valley Chapter representative Nshan Kulikian–who reviewed 1999 ANC Valley initiatives and activities.

ANC Western Region Board Member Nshan Bostanian briefed the crowd on the ANC’s participation in regional and national initiatives and outlined the ANC’s position on the Armenian Genocide–Section 907 restrictions on aid to Azerbaijan and US aid to Armenia and Karabakh.

Los Angeles School Unified School Board Member–Caprice Young then provided the attendees with an update of the situation at Grant High School in North Hollywood–where a few months earlier tensions between Armenian and Latino escalated into an altercation involving dozens of students. Young noted that since the time of the incident–no similar altercations had occurred. She encouraged parents and community representatives however–to remain vigilant and active in school affairs in order to assure that similar flare-ups are not repeated.

ANCA-WR Executive Director–Vicken Sonentz-Papazian noted that in 1999–the ANC was pleased by the increased participation in American politics and Hai Tahd activities by young Armenian Americans.

He noted that in attendance were two Armenian American candidates for the 43rd State Assembly seat–Democrat Paul Krekorian and Republican Craig Missakian–as well as Lena Kaimian from Congressman James Rogan’s office–Mannik Khatchatrian from Senator Adam Schiff’s office and Sunday Sarkissian from Assemblyman Scott Wildman’s office.

Moreover–he pointed out that Glendale City Councilmen Rafi Manoukian of Glendale and La Vazken Yardemian of La Crescenta–both served as ANC local Chairmen prior to their election to public office.

Sonentz-Papazian concluded that the increased participation of talented and committed Armenian American youth bode well for Hai Tahd in the coming years.

State Senator Adam Schiff spoke about his efforts to maintain the integrity of the historical record on the Armenian Genocide and preserve it for future generations by securing state funding for a documentary film–"The Witnesses," produced by the Armenian Film Foundation.

Schiff stated that he was encouraged to see young Armenian American Democrats like Paul Krekorian and Rafi Manoukian playing an increasingly visible role in community affairs.

In addition to State Senator Adam Schiff and Los Angeles School Board Members–Julie Korenstein and Caprice Young–representatives from the offices of Congressmen Brad Sherman and James Rogan and State Assemblymen–Robert Hertzberg and Scott Wildman were in attendance.
