President Meets With Leaders of Union

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenian President Robert Kocharian held a meeting December 22 with members of the newly established Interunion Council of Creative Unions of Armenia. The ICCU includes the unions of writer–composers–music experts–cinematographers–journalists–painters–theater workers–architects and designers.

The meeting participants said that being deeply concerned over the current situation in the country–people and culture–they decided to establish the Council. The ICCU’s goal is to promote the development of Armenia’s intellectual potential and spiritual values–settle problems of state-intelligentsia relations–participate in adopting laws dealing with culture.

Composer Robert Amirkhanian said the group was formed on the need for a forum where citizens and artists can express their attitude on the ongoing processes. "We want to see our country strong and healthy," he stressed.

The meeting participants expressed the unanimous opinion that intelligentsia’s great potential is not yet fully used. They noted that the intelligentsia must reconsider its role and responsibility in the public life and be actively involved in ongoing processes. One of ICCU’s main goals will be to fill the spiritual void in Armenia. The meeting participants stressed the importance in the state’s involvement in promoting national values in society.

During the meeting the sides also addressed cultural issues and the status of creative unions.
