Kocharian Meets with Business Leaders

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenia’s president Robert Kocharian met with more than 70 businessmen in the Government Reception Hall December 28. Prime minister Aram Sargsyan–finance minister Levon Barkhudarian–industry and trade minister Karen Chshmaritian–and Central Bank president Tigran Sargssian also participated in the meeting–reported the presidential press office.

Robert Kocharian noted with satisfaction that such meetings are becoming traditional. He said that the main objective of the meeting is to learn the businessmen’s opinions and views on the current economic policy in the republic and to sum up the results of the passing year–thus trying to more precisely assess the achievemen’s and mistakes. He expressed his expectations for an open and friendly talk on the problems the businessmen are concerned about.

Call the strong and established business sector as a pledge for a stable state–the president noted that the government should take into consideration the major taxpayers’ views on current economic policy and create a relevant attitude towards them–based on mutual trust and favoring the country’s prosperity.

Summing up 1999 economic sector events and performance–the president called the passing year as considerably heavy. According to him–the continuation of the influence of the Russian crisis–parliamentary and local elections during the year–as well as the October 27 tragic events in the Armenian parliament–have had their serious impact on the country’s economic life.

At the same time Robert Kocharian noted certain achievemen’s during the year. Expressing satisfaction with industrial development–especially in the private sector–he named the enterprises which have contributed significantly to the industrial growth.

With regard to errors–the president pointed out lack of systematized oversight–failure in activating investment policy as well as in solving several problems related to the tax administration.

Paying attention to legal system improvemen’s–Kocharian noted that they do create serious guarantees for the protection of businesses in Armenia.

Aram Vardanian–leader of the Association of Entrepreneurs and Businessmen–rendered the message of the Association to the president of the republic–expressing expectations that the country’s authorities will secure long-lasting stability in the republic. He also handed Robert Kocharian a souvenir from their association.

In the course of the meeting the participants made various proposals and assessmen’s of the current situation in the country. They all emphasized the importance of restoring trust and belief in people. Kocharian noted that proper attention will be paid to the issues raised at the meeting. He called on the businessmen to enlarge the frames of their activities–including the provinces as well. The president expressed eagerness to extend his full support to all investment projects.
