ARF Executive Council Issues Statement on French Senate Decision

YEREVAN–The Armenian Revolutionary Federation Executive Council of Armenia issued a statement Friday–expressing its disapointment in the French Senate’s decision to not include the Armenian Genocide Resolution on its agenda.

The ARF Executive Council stated that having given into pressure from Turkey–the French Senate halted the process which had begun with the French National Assembly’s decision to adopt the Armenian Genocide Resolution officially recognzing the 1915 massacres and uprooting of Armenia’s from their homeland as genocide.

The French Senate’s decision is one which does not comply with a the decision taken by the European Parliament in 1987–recognizing the Armenian Genocide and making Turkey’s entry into the European Union contingent on its recognition of Ottoman Turkey’s perpetration of the Armenian Genocide and the acceptance of this crime against humanity’s proper consequences–stated the release.

"The (French) Senate’s decision is at best incomprehensible–given France’s role as an active guarantor and protector of democracy and civil values," said the statement–"and that which was inflicted onto the Armenian nation at the beginning of the 20th Century–was not a crime against the Armenian people–but it was a crime against the whole of humanity." The statement also maintainted that in a new millennium–when attempts of genocide and ethnic cleansing are being thwarted internationally–it is of the essence that a clear message be sent that crimes against humanity such as genocide will not be tolerated and perpetrators will indeed be punished.

"At the same time–we believe that France will indeed use the opportunity to demonstrate its belief in human value on an international leve," concluded the statement.
