Conference for Author’s 100th Birthday Held

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Among the ideologues of the Armenian movement of the 1920s-’30s was the Chief Advisor to Karekin Nzhde–Armenian national writer and thinker–Haik Asatrian. A scientific conference on the occasion of Asatrian’s 100th birthday anniversary was held at the reading hall of Yerevan State Economic Institute (YSEC) February 25. The conference was organized by the YSEC Department of Philosophy and the Nationalistic Club.

Although mentioned by some public figures and representatives of the intelligentsia–Asatrian remains an unknown author–and his valuable ideological heritage has not been appreciated–Head of the YSEC Department of Philosophy–Professor Aram Sargsyan stated at the conference. He emphasized the importance of the conference to remedy this tragedy.

It was pointed out at the conference that President of the Nationalistic Club Mushegh Lalayan collected all the published articles of Asatrian’s and in 1995 and 1998 released two volumes. According to Sargsyan–"it is only due to Mushegh Lalayan’s works that we know something about Haik Asatrian."

Asatrian was born in 1900 in Alashkert. After graduating from the local school he was admitted to the Student Union of the ARF. In 1918-1919 he was editor of the "Shant" publication released by the Union. Later Asatrian was editor of the "Khrovk" journal and the "Nation and Homeland" semi-annual almanac. Asatrian participated in the uprising in February 1921. Due to his participation he had to leave Armenia and settle down in Europe with Karekin Nzhde. In 1930–Asatrian graduated from the Department of Philosophy of Paris University and received a doctor’s degree. Later Asatrian went to Bulgaria and joined Nzhde. This period was Asatrian’s most prolific and fruitful. Asatrian died in Sofia in 1956.
