EP Deputy Holds Meetings At Armenian Parliament

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Rapporteur of the European Parliament on the European Parliament-South Caucasus States relations Pierre Garton–who is currently in Yerevan–held a number of meetings March 3 at the Armenian National Assembly.

During his meeting with member of the Commission for Armenia-European Union (EU) Parliamentary Cooperation–David Lokian–Garton addressed issues related to the development of the Armenia-EU cooperation–and Armenia’s participation in the programs implemented by this international organization.

Garton also held a meeting with Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Social Affairs–Health and Nature Protection Gagik Tadevossian. He pointed out the importance of ensuring human right protection principles–establishment of democratic institutions and social equality. The sides also discussed environmental problems and improvement of the public health system. In his turn–Tadevossian expressed optimism that Armenia will become a CE member in the near future–which–he believes will have a positive effect on the Karabakh settlement.

At his meeting with Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for State and Legal Affairs Victor Dallakian–Garton received information on the legislative process in Armenia. Dallakian pointed out the considerable work aimed at bringing Armenia’s legislation to conformity with European standards. Dallakian called Armenia’s membership in the Council of Europe a step towards its integration into the European Union. He informed Garton that a new concept of territorial and local government is currently under elaboration with the participation of European experts.

At his meetings with the member of the "Unity" faction–Vice-Speaker of the National Assembly–and Leader of the "Stability" deputy group Vardan Aivazian–Garton addressed issues related to the Karabakh settlement–formation of the regional security system–ensuring of peace–and creation of an atmosphere of mutual confidence.

Garton also held a meeting with Vice-Speaker of the National Assembly Gagik Aslanian. Pointing out the importance of bringing the country’s political and economic structures to conformity with European standards and emphasizing Armenia’s striving for developing cooperation with the European Union–Aslanian expressed the opinion that all the three Transcaucasian countries must be equally involved in the implementation of regional economic programs–which–Aslanian believes–will promote the process of solving political problems. Aslanian assured Garton of Armenia’s intention to continue the policy of economic liberalization.
