ARS to Mark 90th Anniversary at UN

WATERTOWN–Ambassador Betty King Guest Speaker at ARS 90th Anniversary Celebration Ambassador Betty King–United States Representative on the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)–will be guest speaker at a reception celebrating the Armenian Relief Society’s 90th anniversary to be held in New York on April 3.

The event is under the auspices of the Permanent Mission of Armenia to the United Nations and will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the UN Plaza Hotel.

The Armenian Relief Society has been an ECOSOC member since 1998; member countries of ECOSOC are invited to the celebration as are countries where the worldwide ARS has affiliated entities. With worldwide membership of around 18,000 in 23 countries–the ARS promotes educational–social–welfare and family unit programs and awareness of Armenian ethnicity in communities around the world. International ARS programs include–among others–the "Sponsor-A-Child" orphan assistance–the Socio-Medical Centers in Beirut–Lebanon and Aleppo–Syria–summer youth camps in several countries–Daycare Center/Kindergartens in Nagorno Karabakh–and the Mother & Child Health Center in Akhurian–Armenia.

Keynote speaker King–ambassador since 1997–represents the US on matters of social and economic policy at the UN and works with her counterparts to improve the economic and social environmen’s world wide. She has served as vice president of the Annie Casey Foundation–a private enterprise dedicated to disadvantaged children in the United States–and as Deputy Commissioner of Mental Health Services in Washington–and as Child and Youth Services administrator.

Ambassador King is a native of St. Vincent–West Indies–and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Windsor (Ontario) and a Master’s from State University of New York. She was also a Fellow of the National Endowment for Humanities at Harvard University.
