NATO Surprised By Azeri Georgian Desire to Join

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"The desire of Georgia and Azerbaijan to join NATO is obviously of a unilateral nature," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ara Papyan told reporters. The Prime news Agency quoted the official as saying that NATO representatives regards this prospect as inadvisable.

During the talks with NATO held in Brussels March 6-8–the Armenian delegation asked NATO officials to comment on the statemen’s being made by Azeri and Georgian officials regarding their countries’ desire to join the Alliance. "It aroused nothing but surprise among the NATO military–some of whom had not heard about any such statement before," Papyan said.

Earlier this week–it was announced that the NATO Secretary-General would visit Armenia in Septemebet and will hold talks regarding the ongoing participation by Armenia in the NATO Partnership for Peace program.
