State Church Memorandum Signed

ETCHMIADZIN (Noyan Tapan)–A "Memorandum of Understanding" between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the Holy Armenian Apostolic Church was signed in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. It will become the basis for an agreement clarifying and regulating the Church-State relationship.

His Holiness Karekin II–the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenia’s; Aram Sargsyan–Prime Minister of Armenia; and Gagik Haroutunian–Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Armenia–were present at the signing ceremony.

On behalf of the Holy Armenian Apostolic Church–His Grace Bishop Navassard Ktchoyan–Vicar General of Araratian Patriarchal Diocese–and His Eminence Archbishop Shahe Ajemian–Dean of the Theology Faculty of Yerevan State University–signed the Memorandum. On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Armenia–Shahen Karamanoukian–Chief Advisor to the Prime Minister–Chief of the Government Staff–and Levon Mkrtchian–Acting President of the State Council on the Religious Affairs–signed the Memorandum.

The sides expressed their appreciation of the ratification of such a document–mentioning that the document underlines the importance of the Holy Armenian Apostolic Church in the various spheres of public life.

The signing of the final agreement of cooperation between the Church and the State is expected in the following nine months.
