Assassination Investigation Yields New Arrests

STEPANAKERT (Combined Sources)–The prosecutor general’s office in Karabakh told Armenpress that the investigating team–formed in response to the assassination attempt on president Arkady Ghoukassian–continues its work–and announced that there have been several new arrests in this regard.

The investigating team is expected to announce preliminary results of its work.

Since the assassination attempt some 40 individuals have been arrested in Karabakh on suspicion of involvement in the assassination attempt.

It is not clear how many people or who has been implicated directly with committing the crime. Ghoukassian and his bodyguard Samvel Gabrielian were transferred to the Operating Division of the Mikaelian Institute of Surgery on Friday.

The Institute’s Director Hamlet Tamazian said that conditions of both the patients are serious but stable.

Sources have said that a group of investigators from Armenia’s Prosecutor General’s Office left for Stepanakert on Friday. The group includes detectives on cases of special importance working under the Prosecutor General. The investigators from Armenia will help their colleagues in Karabakh. A group of Azeri saboteurs made an attempt to penetrate territories controlled by NKR armed forces on Tuesday–in the wee hours of the morning.

The attempt was successfully stopped due to quick retaliation and the group had to retrieve sustaining considerable losses–the Karabakh Ministry of Defense reported.
