Kocharian Satisfied With Visit to Georgia

TBILISI (Armenpress)–Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze and Armenian President Robert Kocharian expressed satisfaction with their negotiations in Tbilisi Tuesday–reported Itar-Tass.

"We spoke for almost 90 minutes–discussing the development of bilateral relations–and regional and international problems. I see no problems in developing bilateral relations–but there is still reserve to strengthen cooperation," said Shevardnadze. He added that Armenian active participation in forming the Eurasian transport corridor was also discussed.

Bilateral relations are developing "in a genuinely fraternal and friendly atmosphere," Kocharian said. He thanked the Georgian authorities for devoting attention to the large Armenian Diaspora in Georgia and confirmed the readiness to further develop relations with Tbilisi.

All persons directly involved in the attempt on the life of Karabakh President Arkady Ghoukassian of March 22 have been arrested–and the crime’s organizers are being exposed–Kocharian said in Tbilisi Tuesday.

Kocharian also announced in Tbilisi that his direct dialogue with Azeri President Aliyev will soon resume.

According to Itar-Tass–President Kocharian noted that "President Aliyev is seeking peaceful resolution of the Karabakh conflict." Kocharian assured that the Armenia’side is also resolute to continue dialogues for a peaceful regulation.

President Shevardnadze announced that Georgia "will promote the dialogue between the two leaders for the regulation of all disputable issues around the conflict."

Speaking before the Georgian parliament–visiting President Kocharian said that "the 3+3+2 formula–proposed by Armenia" suggests that the tree South Caucasian states–their immediate neighbors (Russia–Turkey–Iran)–and the EU and US must participate in the regional security system–reported Itar-Tass.

In Kocharian’s opinion–the self-protection reflex of South Caucasian states implies that policy pursuing regional polarization is not admissible.

The security system for south Caucasian states may become efficient provided that all countries having immediate influence on the region’s states have full participation.

President Kocharian also stressed that the stability in the region will not be established without the development of necessary relations with Russia.
