National Assembly Speaker WHO Rep Discuss Issues

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Public health must always be at the center of the government’s activities–and the National Assembly continues to make its contribution to that policy realm as much as possible–said National Assembly Speaker Armen Khachatrian in a meeting with Mark Danson–World Health Regional Director on Tuesday.

During the meeting–which was attended by Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Social Affairs–Health and Environmental Protection Gagik Tadevossian and Minister of Health and Social Welfare Ararat Mkrtichian the sides pointed out the importance of adopting effective laws in this regard.

Khachatrian put special emphasis on the problems of protecting the health of women and children as well as on efficient anti-epidemic measures. He pointed out the need for health-related legislation and pronounced for close cooperation with the WHO regional office.

Danson pointed out the need for developing the health insurance system and stressed the importance of ensuring the medical safety of the vulnerable populations sectors–such as the elderly–the disabled–women and children.

In discussions on the financial difficulties of the health industry–and the government’s inability to provide adequate financial assistance the minister addressed the problem of wages of medical workers (in 1999 the sum totaled 3,000,000,000 Drams.

Danson in his part promised to explore the possibilities of financial assistance to Armenia from the WHO.
