Samvel Babayan May Be Charged in Connection With March 22 Attack

STEPANAKERT (Noyan Tapan)–In an interview to the "Azat Artsakh" (Free Artsakh) newspaper–Nagorno Karabakh Republic Prosecutor General Mavrik Ghoukassian stated that Samvel Babayan would probably be charged in connection with the terrorist act committed against Karabakh President Arkady Ghoukassian on March 22. At the same time–he pointed out that as a result of material studies conducted 7-8 months ago–the general was charged with abuse of office–forgery in discharging official duties and tax evasion.

According to Ghoukassian–a criminal case was instituted against Babayan’s brother Karen–the mayor of Stepanakert–who was placed under arrest and his powers were suspended in this connection.

The prosecutor general denied the press reports alleging duress against Samvel Babayan and other suspects. Ghoukassian did not exclude that some of the suspects–who are now under arrest–will be released in view of their involvement not being proven.

15 people arrested on suspicion of involvement in the March 22 attack were released from custody.
