Ter Sahakian’s Wife Says Her Husband Not Mentally Ill

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Lusine Savadian–the wife of Armen Ter-Sahakian who has been sentenced to the death penalty by an Armenian court last week for carrying out a series of high-profile murders of senior Armenian officials–refuted the information spread by the investigation that her husband’s health was poor.

"He is absolutely healthy and has never suffered from any mental disorder," she said at a news conference August 1. "If an accident happens to my husband in the prison the responsibility will fall on the law-enforcement agencies," she added.

The wife of Alik Grigorian–another member of the gang who is sentenced to the death penalty–joined her. According to them–their husbands are now in the prison cell sentenced to the death penalty. The two women did not dismiss the fact that their husbands were involved in serious crimes–but they pled for mercy for them saying that those who had made their husbands criminals must be punished. "My husband executed orders and in the end was made a scapegoat," Ter-Sahakian’s wife said. She said that her husband was advised to act as a mentally disordered person during the pre-trial investigation–but refused to disclose any names of people involved.

Ter-Sahakian’s counselor for defense Safar Khachatrian told he was going to petition the Review court protesting against the local court’s ruling.
