Group Claims Several Dozen POWs in Azerbaijan

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenian authorities released another Azeri POW on August 14–who left for Baku with the assistance of the International Committee of the Red Cross–amid reports that Azerbaijan is still holding several dozen Armenian POW’s–while only one POW remains in Armenia.

Ramiz Mamedov–born in 1975–was not verbose when answering reporters’ questions at the Yerevan Zvartnots airport before his departure. He only said that he had been captured in 1998 but could not tell on what section of Armenia-Azerbaijan border. Mamedov would have been released much earlier if not for his fears that he would be persecuted in Azerbaijan. "Today I have no fears to return home," he said.

He also said that he had been treated normally while kept in Armenian prison.

Vera Grigorian–chairwoman of a public organization from Karabakh called ‘Persons Reported Missing from Karabakh’ and Rima Arakelian–chairwoman of a similar Armenian organization were participating in the turnover hoping that they could help return persons who are reported missing.

As Vera Grigorian said–around 600 residents of Karabakh are thought to be reported missing. Information on 550 of them are placed in computer networks. She said they are cooperating with a similar organization in Azerbaijan.

To date–two Azeris–one a civilian and another POW are kept in Armenia. They refuse to go back.

After releasing two Armenian POW on July 28–Azeri authorities insist that there are no other Armenian POW in their territory. However–according to Armenian sources–there are still 3-4 Armenia POW in Azerbaijan and about 900 persons reported missing.
