Karabakh Interests Must be Configured in Peace Plan

STEPANAKERT (Noyan Tapan)–In an interview to the "Azat Artsakh" newspaper–touching upon the Karabakh settlement issue–Karabakh’s President Arkady Ghoukassian said that the international community’s interest in the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict creates a favorable political background for it.

He also added that the OSCE Minsk Group and other organizations–as the experience of international mediation showed–could only suggest ideas and variants of settlement of the conflict–but the real solution to the problem was only possible in the process of direct talks between the parties to the conflict themselves.

According to Arkady Ghoukassian–no agreement reached within the framework of the negotiations held between Aliyev and Kocharian can be final if it does not take into account the position of Nagorno Karabakh.

According to Ghoukassian–in the case of extension of the meeting format with Karabakh involved–the negotiations would be more productive.

"I understand that such a step will be very difficult for the President of Azerbaijan to take–however–it is prompted by the way things are shaping out," stressed Ghoukassian.
