Russian Military Units Arrive for Border Patrol

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Some 44 graduates of the Russian Military Academy and other universities arrived in Armenia Tuesday for a tour of duty as part of the continuing effort to strengthen Russian border patrol units in Armenia.

Armenia’s National Security Ministry information office told Armenpress that the newly arrived Russian soldiers met with National Security Minister Lt. Gen. Carlos Petrossian.

In greeting the visiting officers–Petrossian emphasized the importance of continuing the Russian-Armenian cooperation tradition. He said that Russia has been and remains Armenia’s military ally–the product of which is the stationing of Russian border patrol troops in Armenia.

Petrossian pledged that his ministry will do its utmost to preserve and strengthen the cooperation between the Armenian military and the Russian Border Patrol command. Furthermore–he said the National Security Ministry will ensure the complete participation of the Russian soldiers in those activities.

The newly-arrived soldiers were presented with momentos. A tour of Armenian sites is also planned for the soldiers.

On Tuesday–prime minister Antranig Markarian met with the visiting Russian soldiers and congratulated them on the successful completion of Russian Academy training–as well as their stationing in Armenia.

Markarian emphasized the importance of Russian-Armenian military ties–adding that the joint border patrol mechanism created by the two countries is an exemplary step for the protection of Armenian and Commonwealth of Independent States’ frontiers.

in response–the head of the Russian Border Patrol units in Armenia–Lt. Gen. Mikhail Naymilo thanked the prime minister on behalf of the Russian soldiers stationed in Armenia for the support and hospitality by the Armenian government.

Naymilo ensured that the new troops will join with others stationed in Armenia and will provide their highest expertise in protecting the borders of Armenia and the CIS.

Present at the gathering were the ministers of national security–interior–finance & economy and culture–all whom responded to questions posed by the newly-arrived Russian soldiers.

The introduction of Armenian cultural values and traditions to the Russian soldiers was also emphasized during the meeting.
