Education System Improved in Armenia

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The rector of Yerevan State University–academician Radik Martirosian said at a news conference today that the number of school-leavers who applied to the University this year remained the same if compared with the last year. There were 3,200 applicants–2,000 of which entered the University–and 800 of them were granted free education–the rest will have to pay their tuition fees.

Martirosian said that in comparison with the years in the USSR–the education level has improved due to the modern technologies. Today the University has 800-1,000 computers–several faculties use 3 computer rooms.

However–there are also serious losses. The experimental studies and scientific researches have much reduced because of the lack of finances. In Martirosian’s words–only 27 % of the university’s annual budget comes from the state. Taking into account the obligatory social paymen’s and the income taxes levied from the staff’s salaries–the University gives more money to the government than it receives.

90% of the money received from tuition fees is spent on professors’ salaries. The University’s international activities (co-operation programs with 70 different universities are signed) and benefactors help cover other expenditures of the University.
