Karabakh Supreme Court Rejects Petition to Move Babayan Trial

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The counsel for former Karabakh defense minister Samvel Babayan–who is accused of a premeditated assassination attempt on the life of Karabakh president Arkady Ghoukassian last March 22–issued a statement Wednesday to the Armenian parliament requesting that law-makers join their demand to pass Babayan’s trial to an Armenian court.

The Supreme court of Karabakh has rejected the counsel’s petition to move the trial to an Armenian court.

Babayan’s lawyer Judex Shakarian told Armenpress that the Karabakh Supreme court’s decision was groundless and ran counter to acting legislation in Karabakh along with international norms of human rights protection.

The statement says that investigation into all crimes–committed by military servicemen in Karabakh over the last two years–have been carried out by Armenia’s military prosecution and trials have been conducted in the Karabagh capital Stepanakert by the Syunik provincial court of Armenia.

According to Shakarian–Babayan and four other defendants are military servicemen and should be tried by an Armenian court. The Karabakh prosecutor’s office has set September as the date for Babayan’s trial.
