Armenia’s CE Membership Should Not Be Contingent Upon Azerbaijan

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The newly appointed Italian ambassador to Armenia Paolo Andrea Trabalza presented his credentials to Armenian President Robert Kocharian.

The Italian diplomat reaffirmed his country’s willingness to expand the bilateral relations with Armenia.

Congratulating the Italian ambassador–President Kocharian expressed his satisfaction with the Armenian-Italian political dialogue and bilateral economic relations. He expressed confidence that the appointment of the new Italian ambassador will promote the mutually advantageous cooperation. The president stressed that despite the positive changes in the bilateral relations–there is great unrealized potential–and if active work is carried out–success will certainly be achieved. He also pointed to the problem of legislation necessary for cooperation.

In his turn–Ambassador Trabalza said that Italy is active in promoting Armenia’s membership in the Council of Europe. Presenting Armenia’s position–President Kocharian stressed that Armenia is for becoming a CE member simultaneously with Azerbaijan–but it objects to both countries’ membership being dependent on each other’s. "It is desirable that our neighbor be a country based on the values of democracy and human rights–which will allow us to better understand each other," President Kocharian said. He also stressed that of Armenia’s membership in the CE must not depend on the processes going on in Azerbaijan.
