US to Build New Embassy in Yerevan

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–US ambassador in Yerevan Michael Lemmon and Yerevan Mayor Albert Bazeyan met near Lake Yerevan last Saturday allotted for the construction of the new US embassy.

In a few days–the two sides are expected to formally conclude the deal on the purchase of the land–whose search started over two years ago. The government of Armenia will then receive a payment of $2,000,000 and in return–the United States government will receive the title to the seven hectares of land for a 99 year term.

"The purchase of this land and the building of a new American embassy here in Yerevan demonstrates the commitment of the United States to the friendship and close relations between our two nations and our faith and confidence in Armenia’s future," US Ambassador Lemmon said.

Lemmon said the preliminary calculations showed that around $50 million would be needed for the construction of the new embassy and it would take up 3 to 5 years to finish the project.

The designing will be worked out by both US and local architects who will try to combine high security deman’s with the elemen’s of traditional Armenian architecture.

The deal also stipulates that the construction would be halted provided archeological items of great value found at the site.

When asked what would become of the old embassy building–Lemmon said they would like to sell it to another embassy.
