OSCE Yerevan Office Discusses Recent Meetings Held in Yerevan

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The head of the OSCE Yerevan office ambassador–Roy Reeve convened a news conference today to sum up the outcome of two major events held last week in Yerevan.

The main goal of the first meeting of the OSCE offices operating in the region–held September 25-26–also attended by a representative of Chechnya–was to establish closer contacts between the countries in the region. The head of Vienna-based Center for Prevention of Conflicts and representatives of Austrian and Romanian offices also took part in the meting.

Among several suggestions made by the meeting’s participants–ambassador Reeve singled out those which concern strengthening of cooperation between public organizations dealing with women’s issues–establishment of closer ties between reporters and restoration of frontier trade zones. Ambassador Reeve noted that the Yerevan office was carrying out large-scale work in Armenia’s Tavush province to restore frontier trade between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Reeve assessed positively the outcome of a regional conference on Prospects for the Regional and Trans-Regional Cooperation and the Resolution of the Conflicts. The conference–organized jointly with the Armenian Center for National and International Studies–brought together leading authorities from Armenia–Azerbaijan–Turkey–Iran–the US and other countries to discuss the means and modalities for intersecting conflict resolution–and economic and political cooperation.

"The OSCE activities do not involve expression of any ideas related to the international acknowledgment of the Armenian genocide–but we welcome any development that may promote or enhance normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations," stated ambassador Reeve.
