1700th Anniversary Marked in New York

NEW YORK–His Holiness Aram I–Catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia Wednesday presided over celebrations marking the 1700th anniversary of Armenia’s adoption of Christianity–at an event held at Manhattan’s St. Bartholomew Cathedral.

The Catholicos led a procession of clerics–including non-Armenian religious leaders–to the cathedral. Following vespers–an ecumenical service was celebrated.

Emphasizing the 1700-year-old rich traditions of the Armenian church and Christianity–Prof. Yaroslav Pelican presented a keynote address–elevating the role of the Armenian Church in the Christian movement.

In his remarks–Eastern US and Canada Prelate Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan welcomed the Catholicos to New York–emphasizing the important role he plays within ecumenical circles.

Choloyan stressed that Aram I’s presence encourages parishioners to further support and become part of the church.

In his sermon–the Catholicos urged all to not limit the scope of the 1700th anniversary to the day’s celebrations and events organized for 2001–but rather utilize the occasion to understand the importance of the Armenian church in the Christian movement and as an institution for collective way of life.

An extensive cultural program was also presented during the celebrations–featuring the Eastern Prelacy choir.
