Restoration of Blue Mosque in Yerevan Nearing Completion

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Mohammed Aspar–the Public Relations Officer of the Iranian Embassy in Armenia–said that the restoration of the Blue Mosque in Yerevan will be completed in the near future.

The mosque was constructed in 1765 by the order of Erivan Khan Hussein Ali. Over the years–the mosque started to dissipate and only its frame was preserved.

The restoration of the mosque started in August 1996 by Iranian and Armenian architects. The Iranian government has now spent $1 million on the restoration.

The Blue Mosque is likely to re-open in 2001.
