Kocharian Leaves for Check Up

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–Pesident Robert Kocharian left Armenia for an unknown European country on Tuesday to have a "general medical examination," according to his press office. It said the Armenian leader will undergo a check-up somewhere in "Europe." No other details–including the more precise destination of Kocharian’s trip–were reported.

It is the first time that Kocharian–46–is reported to be applying for medical help outside Armenia. A presidential spokeswoman–Hasmik Petrosian–told RFE/RL that he does not feel unwell or suffer from a particular illness. Petrosian said the head of state simply wants doctors to look into his overall health condition–which she said has not been examined in the last five years.

The spokeswoman added that Kocharian will return to Yerevan "in three days time."
