Schiff Calls Hastert Rogan Request Inexcusable

* Statement by Hastert–Rogan reminiscent of Genocide deniers.

PASADENA–Sen. Adam B. Schiff expressed great disappointment at the latest statement issued by House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Rep. James Rogan in which they attempt to explain their failure to keep a promise made to Armenian-American constituents regarding the Armenian Genocide resolution.

This past summer Speaker Hastert promised to bring the Armenian Genocide resolution–which had been virtually ignored for the past two years–to a floor vote. Working with the Democratic leadership in the House–Sen. Schiff contacted members of Congress to support the resolution at every stage in the process. However–the resolution was pulled by Hastert just minutes before it was scheduled for a floor vote.

"Not only did the most powerful member of the US House of Representatives renege on a promise–but the language used to excuse the failure is reminiscent of language used by genocide deniers and high-paid apologists for the Turkish government," said Sen. Schiff.

The following is what Hastert and Rogan offered as an excuse to the Armenian-American community: "The US House of Representatives will undoubtedly return to consideration of this important issue if the Turkish Government and the Armenian Government have not found a satisfactory way to get the full truth of what happened during those troubled years-on the record. These are issues that diplomats and historians are equipped to answer. Congressman Rogan and I strongly urge our State Department to aggressively seek cooperation from both the Turkish and Armenian governmen’s to allow a full and fair investigation designed to seek the truth."

"This statement is an incredible retreat. What is there to discuss with Turkey about the Armenian Genocide? What facts are there left to discover? The facts of the Genocide are clear and unequivocal," said Sen. Schiff. "This is an unacceptable response. It is nothing short of an excuse for failure."
