Schiff Rally Brings Out Lockyer Leading Officials

LA CANADA-FLINTRIDGE–A pre-election rally Sunday for State Sen. Adam Schiff’s campaign for the 27th Congressional district–hosted by Mr. & Mrs. Mark and Paulette Geragos and the Armenian National Committee-Political Action Committee at the Geragos residence–attracted influential politicians such as State Attorney General Bill Lockyer and Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.).

The public officials were joined by some 250 Schiff supporters to lend a final helping hand to Schiff’s bid for the US Congress.

During the brief–yet eventful program–party host Mark Geragos–of the renowned Geragos and Geragos law firm–welcomed the guests to his home and the rally. He explained the importance of voting in Tuesday’s election and enumerated the contributions made by Adam Schiff during his tenure as State Senator.

"The enthusiasm displayed by ANC-PAC supporters was evidence that during this election season–the Armenian-American community will turn out on to make its voices heard," said ANC-PAC representative Souzi Zerounian-Khanzadian.

In his remarks–Attorney General Lockyer–the former Speaker pro-tempore of the California State Senate–praised Schiff for his leading role on issues regarding education–crime and social welfare–as well as his spearheading of issues concerning the Armenian-American community.

Lockyer recounted Schiff’s efforts to author and successfully pass legislation barring foreign countries from establishing academic chairs in the University of California–as well as his role in securing almost $500,000 in state funds for the completion of a documentary on the Armenian Genocide.

Most importantly–however–Lockyer praised Schiff for his continued presence–as a public servant–within his district–calling him an official who truly is concerned about his constituents.

In his poignant remarks–Rep. Sherman recounted the recent effort in Congress to approve legislation recognizing the Armenian Genocide. He pledged that as a member of the influential International Relations Committee–he will continue to do his utmost to ensure the passage of such a bill in the 107th Congress.

The Congressman from Sherman Oaks also outlined the role Schiff undertook during the weeks that the resolution was being deliberated in Congress–by urging Democrats and Democratic leaders to support the Genocide resolution. Sherman also identified Schiff’s visit to Washington to rally for the Genocide bill as a sign of his commitment to the issue.

Sherman also emphasized the importance of Schiff’s election to Congress–not simply because the Democratic party is seeking to regain it majority in Congress–but rather due to his attentiveness to his constituent needs. He also praised Schiff for his active support of Armenian-American issues.

Sherman’stressed that the addition of Schiff to Congress would ensure a more broad support on Armenian and social issues in Congress.

Also speaking was Assemblyman Jack Scott–who is the ANC-PAC endorsed Democratic candidate in the 21st State Senate district. He praised Schiff for his accomplishmen’s as State Senator and wished him well on his bid for Congress.

In thanking the guests–Schiff–who was attending the event with his wife–Eve–praised the Armenian-American community and the ANC-PAC for its understanding of the importance of political system and its continued encouragement for Armenian-Americans to vote.

The Congressional candidate pledged to personally move forward the Genocide resolution in Congress–if elected on November.

Before his concluding remarks–Geragos read a letter signed by House Democratic leader Richard Gephardt (D-Mo.)–in which he praised Schiff for his role in garnering Congressional support for the Genocide resolution. [See complete text of statement above].

In his statement–Gephardt also pledged to personally ensure the passage of the resolution.

If the Democrats regain their majority in Congress following Tuesday’s vote–Gephardt is slated to become Speaker of the House.

Also attending the event were La Canada-Flintridge Councilmember and Democratic candidate in the 44th Assembly district Carol Liu [ANC-PAC endorsed]–LA City Councilman Nick Pecheco–State Board of Equalization member John Chiang–LA Country Assessor candidate Rick Auerbach [ANC-PAC endorsed]–Glendale City Councilman Rafi Manoukian–Torrance City Councilman Jack Messerlian–La Crescenta Town Council member Vazken Yardemian and LA Country Superior Court Judge (Ret.) Warren Ettinger.
