Kocharian Stresses Need for Constitutional Reform

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenian President Robert Kocharian met with a delegation led by Gerhard Batliner–the deputy-chairman of the Council of Europe Venice Commission on November 16 to focus on changes in the Armenian Constitution and the Election.

President Kocharian expressed satisfaction that Armenia’s cooperation with the Venice Commission is becoming more and more practical. In his turn–Gerhard Batliner described cooperation with Armenian experts on Constitutional reforms as efficient and exemplary–pledging the Commission’s assistance in bringing Armenian legislation in line with European standards.

Participants of the meeting also emphasized the need to improve the Election Code–and laws on mass media–political parties and the judicial system. Later in the day the Council of Europe delegation met with foreign minister Vartan Oskanian.
