5th AAMS Session Held in Yerevan

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The number of cases of ulcer has increased in Armenia during the last few years. Currently–up to 4 percent of the country’s population are suffering from ulcers. Each third resident of the country suffers from gastritis–and each fifth from chronical colitis. These and other problems of gastroenterology were discussed at the 5th session of the Armenian Academy of Medical Sciences held in Yerevan on November 17.

The session was opened by the Armenian Academy of Medical Science President–Professor Levon Mkrtichian who gave a speech on the goals of the AAMS–and gave a report on keylon–an antitumor preparation which is effectively used in the treatment of liver carcinoma. According to Academy’s Vice-President Vilen Harutiunian–among the causes of gastrointestinal disturbances are malnutrition and stress. Heredity is also of high importance. In this connection–Professor Harutiunian addressed modern methods of studying the development of diseases–such as molecular-genetic methods. Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Public Health–Social Affairs and Nature Protection Gagik Tadevossian stressed the role of the scientific research for solving the urgent problems of the public health sector.
