Abp. Vatche Hovsepian Presented Opening Ceremony of 1700th Anniversary in Armenia

A press conference took place at the Western Diocese headquarters in Burbank–on Friday–January 5–during which Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian–who recently returned from Armenia–spoke about his participation in the 1700th anniversary ceremonies there.

During the conference–the Prelate described New Year’s Eve–when Catholicos Karekin II–along with several clergymen–descended down Khor Virab and brought back out the lantern of St. Gregory the Illuminator.

President Kocharian welcomed the procession at the gates of Etchmiadzin–where light from the lantern was passed on to him. The ceremony was continued at Yerevan’s Republic Square–where the majority of spectators were Armenian youth–who had come to witness the transfer of light from lantern to lantern.

Archbishop Hovsepian spoke of the various plans being made for festivities to be held in Armenia and Los Angeles on the occasion of the 1700th anniversary of Christianity’s adoption.

Reverend Father Vazken Movsessian–in charge of the Diocese planning–explained the coming events and spoke of the bilingual pamphlet to be published for this grand occasion. Following a press conference–Hovsepian distributed close to 300 candles he had brought with him from the US.
