First Lady Becomes First Donor of Armenian Register of Marrow

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Benevolent Fund for the Establishment of the Armenian Register of Marrow received its first donors on December 8. The qualities of the donors’ gene profile will be determined through a test of the donors’ blood that is to be included in the database of the Armenian Registry. In case of necessity–the best compatible donors can be determined–and their marrow can be transplanted to the patients in need. The gene profile of Armenia’s–just as of other ancient peoples–has its peculiarities.

Honorable President of the Fund–Armenia’s First Lady Bella Kocharian set an example. "I am glad to become a donor. I think it will be a good year for the entire Armenian people. I wish everybody good health and happiness," she said after her blood was tested for determining the gene profile. Also among the first donors were Health Minister Ararat Mkrtichian–and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Health–Nature Protection and Social Affairs Gagik Tadevossian.

Tadevossian pointed out that transplantation is applied in many medical establishmen’s–but it is not yet regulated by the law. "I promise that the donor-recipient relations will soon be reflected in the legislation," he said. The mother of a child who recently died of leukemia also made a speech. Her child needed a marrow transplantation and despite Bella Kocharian’s interference–the help arrived too late. However–the child’s mother expressed her gratitude to the Fund.

Parliament member Alvard Petrossian stated that she is proud that a program is under implementation in Armenia which proves that Armenia’s–wherever they are–in Armenia–Nagorno Karabakh or in other countries–are one and indivisible nation.

The program is being implemented in cooperation with the ministry of health. Under the contract–other medical establishmen’s are also authorized to draw blood for determining the gene profile–but the determination process can only be carried out at the center which has the required special equipment.
