Armenia Becomes Full Member of Council of Europe

YEREVAN (Armenpress–Noyan Tapan)–The meeting of the Council of Europe Ministerial Committee ended on January 17–2001. The meeting unanimously voted to admit Armenia and Azerbaijan as full members of the Council of Europe. Armenia has now become the 42nd member of this prestigious pan-European organization.

According to the National Assembly’s Public Relations Department–the ceremonial hoisting of Armenia’s national flag will be held in front of the Palace of Europe building in Strasbourg on January 25. An Armenian delegation headed by President Robert Kocharian will be attending the ceremony.

President Kocharian is also expected to make a speech at a plenary meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Another delegation from Armenia led by Chairman of the National Assembly’s Foreign Relations Commission Hovhannes Hovhannissian will leave for Strasbourg on January 20 to participate in the workings of the plenary meeting scheduled for January 22-26.

No report on Armenia was made at the January 17 meeting of the Council of Europe Ministerial Committee–although the meeting read out reports regarding Azerbaijan’s fulfillment of the requiremen’s set to it–in particular–the requirement connected with the elections held in eleven districts in early January–and the results of the permanent monitoring concerning the release of political prisoners.
