Italian Ambassador Says Time to Deal With Genocide

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–"The boundaries of the European civilization are not firmly fixed and there is an apparent tendency for their expansion. Forty-one countries–with a total of 800 million people–are members of the Council of Europe. I am very happy that Armenia has joined the family of European nations," Italy’s Ambassador to Yerevan Paolo Andreas Trabalza said in a news conference on January 22.

The ambassador recalled that his country held the Council of Europe chairmanship from May to November 2000–and during that time–actively supported the issue of Armenia’s accession to the most respected human rights body of Europe.

The ambassador said that it is wrong to regard the Caucasus as part of Asia–"Armenia is definitely part of Europe–and its accession to the Council of Europe is very important."

Referring to the Karabakh conflict regulations–the ambassador said that joint efforts of Armenia and Azerbaijan would be the way out–"each of which must be ready to go to concessions–since it is the only way to find a mutually acceptable peace formula."

Speaking on the possible passage of his country’s parliament–a resolution similar to that of the French one–the ambassador said that he was unaware of his government’s position in it–but "according to my personal viewpoint–it is a historical fact that the Armenian nation was subjected to violations in the last years of the Ottoman empire when it was impossible to keep the international community aware of that fact."

"Today we are in a quite different situation and it is high time to deal with this issue more seriously," the ambassador said.
