Turks to Boycott Sports Events in France Over Genocide Vote

ANKARA (Agence France Presse)–Turkish athletes will boycott a series of tournamen’s in France this year in reaction to the French bill recognizing the killings of Armenia’s under the Ottoman Empire as genocide.

"We will not take part in sports events in France unless it is compulsory," said head of sports directorate Kemal Mutlu. He added–"Under this decision–Turkish athletes will not attend eight sporting events in France this year that we had previously put on the calendar."

Turkish federations will also boycott French-made equipment and will not invite French athletes to events in Turkey–unless it is mandatory Mutlu said.

The Armenian genocide bill that was passed by the French parliament last month–triggered outrage in Turkey with almost daily protests and calls for boycotts of French goods. In retaliation against the bill–Ankara has excluded French firms from several lucrative public tenders worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
