Congressman Schiff Appointed to House Judiciary Committee

WASHINGTON–DC–Congressman Adam B. Schiff has been appointed to serve on the House Judiciary Committee by the Democratic Caucus Steering Committee–and will serve as the Judiciary Committee’s only freshman Democratic member. Members of Congress are appointed to serve on two committees–and Congressman Schiff last week was appointed to serve on the House International Relations Committee. As a State Senator–Schiff served as Chair of the California State Senate Judiciary Committee–prior to being elected to Congress in November 2000.

The House Judiciary Committee–which dates from 1813 and is one of the oldest committees in Congress–is charged with considering many of the most important issues facing the nation. The Committee considers all legislation pertaining to the judiciary and to civil and criminal judicial reform; apportionment of Representatives; bankruptcy; mutiny–espionage–and counterfeiting; civil liberties; constitutional amendmen’s; federal courts and judges; immigration and naturalization; interstate compacts; national penitentiaries; patents–copyrights–and trademarks; presidential succession; and protection of trade and commerce against unlawful restraints and monopolies. The Committee also has jurisdiction over the US Department of Justice as well as federal aid to local law enforcement.

"I intend to focus my efforts on key issues such as protecting our citizens against crime and gun violence–safeguarding our civil and constitutional rights–and working on a bipartisan basis on intellectual property right reforms to ensure that America remains the world leader in e-commerce–the entertainment industry and high technology," said Congressman Schiff. "Membership on the Judiciary and International Relations Committees will also give me the opportunity to champion issues I have worked on aggressively in the past–such as an end to runaway production in the film industry and official US recognition of the Armenian Genocide."

California’s 27th Congressional District is a center of the entertainment and high-tech industries–which are among the region’s largest employers and can be strongly affected by international trade and commerce and intellectual property right issues. The district is also home to a thriving community of Armenian Americans–representing the highest concentration of people of Armenian descent outside of Armenia.
