Conference of Orthodox Parliamen’s Held in Armenia

ETCHMIADZIN (Armenpress–Noyan Tapan)–His Holiness Karekin II–Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenia’s–attended on February 21–the opening ceremony of the international conference titled "The Church–the State–the Society and the Crisis of the Conception of the World’s reconstruction."

The conference–which took place in the building of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia–was organized by the International Foundation for Orthodox Nations’ Unity within the framework of the European Interparliamentary Summit of the Orthodox.

Karekin II welcomed the Orthodox delegates representing the parliamen’s of more than 20 European countries and the representatives of the International Foundation for Orthodox Nations’ Unity. He noted that it was symbolic that this conference–referring the highly important relations of the Church–the state and the society–was being held in Armenia–a country–where authority lay–recognized Christianity as the state religion–and 1700 years ago stated the necessity of cooperation between the Church and the State.

Karekin II accorded special importance to the activity of the summit and the foundation–referring to the violations against the Church as a result of atheist policies that were in place in many Eastern European countries. These policies had destructive consequences on the spiritual life of the society.

"Our mission is the prevention of existing tendencies–which break-down families–degrade morals–manifest cruelty and violence–bring about indifference toward the helpless and powerless–cause the overall destructive invasion of the so called "mass culture," the negative expressions of globalization–which actually bring to spiritual-national values’ subjection in the public life," said His Holiness–and expressed his joy that the legislative body of Armenia also brings its active participation in the conference.

Armen Khachatrian–the Speaker of the National Assembly (Parliament) of Armenia–also welcomed the participants of the international conference. The messages of His Holiness Alexiy II–Patriarch of All Russia; Genadiy Seleznyov–the Speaker of the State Duma of the Russian Federation; Valentina Matviyenko–and the Vice Prime Minister of the Russian Federation–were read.

The conference also condemned the Armenian Genocide. The conference issued a statement in which it expressed its confidence that the condemnation of the Genocide would promote the creation of an atmosphere of trust–stronger peace and stability in the region and rapprochement among nations.
