Former Karabakh Defense Minister Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The Supreme Court of Nagorno Karabakh sentenced former defense minister of Nagorno Karabakh Samvel Babayan and two other defendants–former heads of Babayan’s bodyguards Levon Mirzoyan and Sasoun Aghajanian–accused of plotting to kill Arkady Ghoukasian last March 22–to 14 years imprisonment with confiscation of their personal property. The Judge noted that the decision had been based on the comprehensive analysis of all the evidence gathered in the course of the preliminary investigation and court examination of the case.

Samvel Babayan is accused of the organization of the terrorist act and embezzlement of arms. Sasoun Aghajanian and Levon Mirzoyan are being accused of the direct execution of the assassination attempt.

Erik Pharamazian–another participant of the preparation and execution of the assassination attempt was sentenced to 13 years of imprisonment with confiscation of his personal property.

David Ghoulian who had ensured the terrorists’ departure from the place of crime was sentenced to ten years of imprisonment. Garnik Tsatourian–who–following Samvel Babayan’s instructions–organized the delivery of the embezzled arms to the latter’s native village–was sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment.

For the other 10 defendants–the Court fixed 2-6 years of suspended punishment with release from custody after the sentence came in force.

All the defendants and officers of the Nagorno- Karabakh Republic Defense Army–were deprived of their military ran’s. The arrest of several defendants’ property has been lifted.

The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Supreme Court decision can be appealed in seven days.
