ARF Statement on Javakhk

The international media recently reported that during the February 28th meeting of the Georgian cabinet–President Eduard Shevardnadze instructed relevant ministries–as well as his regional policy department–to forge a seven to ten-year development plan for the Armenian populated region of Javakhk.

Javakhk is an Armenian populated region–located in the southern most tip of Georgia.

Vahan Hovanessian–Chairman of the Armenian parliamentary commission of internal affairs–national security and a member of the ARF Bureau expressed the ARF position on Shevardnadze’s recent proposal by stating–"The directives by President Shevardnadze attest to the fact that the socio-economic–cultural and other basic needs of the population of Javakhk have thus not been met and require special attention. We hope that President Shevardnadze is sincere in his proposal and it will be followed by fundamental solutions–about which we have already clarified our positions. By adressing the immediate needs of the people of Javakhk will help prevent certain elemen’s from instigating unnecessary tensions in Armeno-Georgian relations."
