“Port Kavkaz” Barge Facility to Operate By This Year

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A 16-point agreement was reached at the 28th Session of the CIS Council of Railwaymen held in Yerevan this week.

Vahagn Gharakyozian–head of the Armenian Railway Department–announced the results of talks held with the Russian delegation on the opening of the "Port Kavkaz" barge facility on the Black Sea. Gharakyozian said financial issues had been resolved by both sides–and close to forty Armenian laborers would be involved in the construction efforts. It was noted that the port will be operational by the end of this year. This would allow a more efficient means of trade with Russia and Europe.

The Azerbaijani delegate at the Council mentioned the possibility of reopening the railroad between Armenia and Azerbaijan–saying that this could be possible within a 24 hour period if the Azerbaijani authorities wanted to. The closure of the railroad also has significant financial consequences for Azerbaijan he added–especially for Nakhichevan.
