Armenian Parliamentarians Angered By OTE Reports

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–"The Hellenic Telecommunications Organizations (OTE)–owner of 90 percent of stakes in the ArmenTel operator may sell its stakes only after receiving the Armenian government’s permission," a senior transport and communication minister said–while commenting on a report in the Athens-based Kathimerini newspaper–which–by citing unnamed sources–claimed that the OTE management is discreetly planning to withdraw from ArmenTel in the course of this year and has already offered Turkey’s largest Turk Telecom company to take over its Armenian subsidiary.

A spokeswoman for Armetel denied this information saying that the vice-chairman of OTE has sent a statement which said that the newspaper report that angered Armenian parliament members does not correspond with reality.

Head of the Miasnutyun block Galoust Sahakian said that if Armentel is sold to another company–it will make the government’s drive to deprive the company of its monopoly more difficult.

The ARF thinks that such a deal is not possible. Senior member of the party Aghvan Vardanian said that both the parliament and the public would not allow such a thing.
