“Turkey and Azerbaijan Must Show Armenia Its Place” Says Azeri President

BAKU (combined sources)–"Armenia and the Armenia’s are forcing Azerbaijan to start a war. Some day they can get this if they want it," said the Head of the Foreign Relations Department of the Presidential Executive staff–Novruz Mammadov.

Mammadov said that Azerbaijan would have to resort to military action–if Armenia did not give up its severe and unfair stance in the settlement of the conflict. Mammadov added that the Armenia’s’ nature and their behavior in conflicts were well-known–and that it would not be difficult for Azerbaijan to liberate its lands. He stressed that Azerbaijan had a strong army–the necessary potential and high morale to achieve this goal. As for the results of the scheduled talks between the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents in Florida next month–Mammadov said that positive results could be expected from this meeting if the Armenian leadership demonstrates a sober stance.

In related news–the Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev told a top Turkish military official that Azerbaijan and Turkey were "two armies of one people" and should "show Armenia its place." Abiyev’s commen’s came amid increasing calls within Azerbaijani political circles for the government to take back territory lost to Armenia.

"We want Turkey to be more active in the Caucasus," Abiyev was quoted as telling Turkish Lieutenant General Nusret Tasdeler.

"If Turkey shows what it is capable of–then Armenia would not play any games under the guise of some genocide," he said–referring to Armenian deman’s for recognition of the 1915 Armenian Genocide.

In an interview–President Aliyev also called for increased military cooperation with Turkey–saying he would welcome a Turkish military base on Azerbaijani territory.
