Georgian Turkish Military Ties Disturb Armenia

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian said that Turkish-Georgian military cooperation causes serious alarm in Yerevan because it may considerably upset the regional balance. He said Georgia’s actions in this regard may effectively make it a participant in the policy of isolating Armenia now being pursued by Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Georgian President Edward Shevardnadze announced on April 30 that his country does not intend to set up a military union or promote its formation. Speaking at a news conference–Shevardnadze dismissed Oskanian’s concerns. Shevardnadze said creation of such an alliance is unacceptable. He described his country’s relations with Armenia as "fraternal."
