Yerevan Confirms Upcoming Minsk Group Meeting in Malta

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–The Armenian foreign ministry confirmed Monday reports that the American–French and Russian diplomats leading the OSCE’s Minsk Group on Nagorno-Karabakh will on Friday meet in Malta to look at ways of moving forward the stalled peace process. The ministry spokeswoman–Dziunik Aghajanian–told RFE/RL that the meeting is scheduled to last for three days.

The Interfax news agency quoted unnamed diplomatic sources in Moscow as saying on Friday that the mediators will discuss "new complications" impeding further progress in Armenian-Azerbaijani peace talks.

The Karabakh conflict was among issues discussed by US President George Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin at their first-ever meeting in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana on Saturday. But no details have been reported.

According to a top aide to Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliev–Baku hopes that the US-Russian summit will give a new impetus to the Karabakh peace process. " It is gratifying that the issue is a subject for constructive cooperation between Russia and the United States," Novruz Mamedov told Interfax.
