Western US Team Leaves for Homenetmen Games

GLENDALE–Western Region’s Homenetmen’soccer team–together with a group of veterans–left for Lebanon Tuesday–to participate in the Sixth Pan-Homenetmen Games–which will take place in Beirut–from August 11 to 16. The games–which are held once in four years–will include soccer–track and field and ping-pong tournamen’s this year.

The Homenetemen Western Regional Executive had created a three-member committee earlier this year to oversee preparation for the games and ensure a victory for the Western Region.

The group is headed by Sako Sahagian–with Vazken Kalajian serving as head coach and Missak Tatikian as Assistant coach. The head coach of the veteran’s team is Apo Nenejian.

Sahagian said the players of the regional team were selected from the Division A teams. All the players have had the chance to participate in the weekly training held in January–from which the best 14 were selected to participate in the upcoming Sixth Pan-Homenetmen Games.

Until now–out of the six Pan-Homenetmen Games–three were dedicated to soccer. The first soccer games were held in Unites States–while the second in Canada.

The Western United States region team has won in both of them. The team is hopeful to win again this year and bring the cup home.

The official opening ceremony will take place on Saturday–August 11–in Lebanon. The ping-pong games will start shortly after–followed by the soccer matches.

Before the finals of the championship–the veterans of Lebanon and Western US Homenetmen teams will compete in a friendly soccer match.

The games will officially close on Thursday–August 16. The final soccer match will take place at the Bourdj Hammoud stadium–and will be followed by closing ceremonies–organized by the Homenetmen Central Executive.
