Belgian Organization Reviews Armenia’s Hospitals

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A special commission recently formed by the Belgian "Medecines sans Fontieres" organization–in cooperation with the specialists of Yerevan Children’s Neurologic Hospital No. 6 re-examined the children kept in the Sevan mental hospital and concluded that only one of the 14 children was ill. The department was closed–however–only 7 of the 14 children were transferred to other establishmen’s. The remaining children were transferred to the adult’s department. The Sevan Mental Hospital currently has 424 beds–20 of them saved for seriously ill people. It is the only mental hospital in Armenia that had a children’s department

Specialists believe that there are 20 patients who require care–but do not need treatment and do not need to stay at the hospital.

The participants in the conference concluded that there must be an organized system of issuing appointment card to mental hospitals–but the most important thing is the adoption of a law "On mental health."
