First Female Weight Lifter Wins Bronze

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The world junior weight-lifting championships ended in Austria recently–and Armenia won 5 medals–including two gold medals.

It was Hripsime Khurshudian’s (15 years old and who weighs 53 kg) first time in such a competition. She exceeded the expectations of the coaches–when she lifted 172.5 kg easily–and won 3rd place and a bronze medal.

The men’s junior squad performed excellently. Five of the nine Armenian weight-lifters participating in the competitions won medals and diplomas. Garnik Abrahamian (45 kg – 165 kg in the snatch–clean and jerk combination)–Aren Hakobian (heavy weight category–lifted 305 kg) won gold medals. Gegham Atoyan (69 kg) and Arkady Poghosian (77 kg)–who lifted 250 kg and 265 kg in the snatch–clean and jerk combination won bronze medals.
