Ghoukassian Praises Water Reform Plans

STEPANAKERT (Noyan Tapan)–Karabakh President Arkady Ghoukassian and US Congressman Adam Schiff met and discussed the congressman’s meetings in Yerevan–the current stage of the social and economic development of Karabakh–as well as conflict settlement.

The sides–in particular–discussed the problem of Stepanakert’s water supply. Ghoukassian said that the US Congress should direct its aid to the resolution of water-supply problems in Stepanakert.

He added that the friends of Karabakh could play an invaluable role in this matter.

Ghoukassian said that the people in Karabakh are well aware of the activities of the congressman’supporting the welfare of Armenia and Karabakh.

He stressed that he regarded the visit as another manifestation of cooperation with friends of Karabakh in the US Congress.

Saying that the Karabakh peace process is at a standstill–Ghoukassian emphasized that the mediators must present a fresh impetus to the process in order to stimulate it.

Regarding the recent attempts at slander by Azerbaijan–Ghoukassian said that the conflict emerged between the people of Karabakh and the authorities of Azerbaijan and called the attempts of the Azeri authorities to distort the essence of the conflict "dangerous and pointless."

"We have never spoken from the position of strength–we’ve always been guided by the current realities–which are beyond question. Conversely–we are always prepared for dialogue and cooperation–for the closest ties with Azerbaijan as a full side," Arkady Ghoukassian underlined.

Congressman Schiff said that he was ready to raise all the questions at the US Congress immediately after returning to the States.

The Schiff–which was sponosored by the Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region–concluded Saturday.
