CIS Leaders Meet in Russia

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Council of CIS Heads of Governmen’s held its regular meeting in Moscow. Before the meeting–Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed the heads of the governmen’s including Armenian Prime Minister Andranik Margarian who is representing Armenia at the meeting.

Most of the participating states approved 13 of the 24 documen’s adopted by the representatives at the previous meeting. Among them are the documen’s dealing with authorized representatives of the CIS members to the CIS Anti-Terrorist Center–the CIS common budget–the execution of the CIS development program for 2000–and cooperation in preventing computer crimes.

At the meeting the Council allotted a considerable amount of time to problems of cultural and scientific and educational cooperation. The leaders of CIS governmen’s discussed agreemen’s "On export and import of cultural values–On the establishment and activities of branches of higher educational institutions in the CIS countries," as well as a draft decision for granting the Moscow Lomonosov University the responsibility of training personnel in the CIS countries about fundamental and natural sciences.

They also discussed funding for the CIS Anti-terrorist center from 2002 and for the creation and improvement of a CIS united air-defense system.

At the joint press conference of Chairman of the Council Georgy Arsenishvili–Prime Minister Mikhail Kasianov and CIS Chairman-Executive Secretary Yuri Yarov–Kasianov said that the Council decided that 50 percent funding for the Anti-terrorist Center will be provided by the Russian Federation–and the remaining 50 percent will come from the other member countries of the CIS.

As for the paymen’s made by the CIS member-countries for financing the structure of the CIS–Yarov pointed out Armenia is among the conscientious payers. He also said that the leaders of the governmen’s of the CIS member countries have decided to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the CIS all together.
